Background
Utilizing a phase approach, Four Winds Group and Parsons Brinckerhoff are assisting WSF in replacing the existing manual methods and procedures with an off-the-shelf solution to eventually integrate the maintenance activities of more than 25 vessels, 20 land-based terminals and the individual maintenance shops at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Repair Facility. The system will be used to 1) Capture and store information for all WSF organizational units responsible for the maintenance and repair of vessels and terminals, 2) Process the full range of maintenance transactions (e.g. work requisitions) used within WSF, 3) Inform managers and maintenance staff of preventive maintenance requirements and activities, 4) Assist in scheduling preventive maintenance and corrective repair activities, 5) Monitor on-hand spare parts and bench stock levels, 6) Provide historical information for quick reference, analysis, litigation purposes and future planning, 7) Interact with other WSF databases (inventory, financial, personnel, etc.), and 8) Provide standard and unique reports and inquiries.
Background
Washington State Ferries (WSF) operates the largest ferry fleet in the United States. Twenty-five ferries cross Puget Sound and its inland waterways, carrying over 23 million passengers to 20 different ports of call. There are over 1500 employees whose work has contributed to making Washington State Ferries the most popular tourist attraction in the State. Because of the constant requirement to improve efficiency and provide the maximum return on taxpayer dollars, WSF is constantly updating their maintenance procedures and process from stem to stern. The mission and requirements are substantial due to the unique combinations of large geographic space between 20 passenger terminals and the constantly moving vessels, which serve the terminals. The WSF maintenance environment is complex and fluid. Skilled maintenance trades are dispatched to perform a wide variety of maintenance assignments on large floating cities. Passenger safety, and comfort as well as strict Coast Guard standards and requirements for the highest levels of certification and expertise contribute to the challenge of meeting the maintenance requirements of the fleet.
